There are several reasons for having a hysterectomy (the surgical removal of the uterus). Reasons for hysterectomy may include: fibroid tumors, uterine bleeding, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, or cancer.

Hysterectomy is the second most frequently performed major operation in the United States, with an estimated 600,000 to 700,000 procedures performed each year (The New England Journal of Medicine, October 2002: 347(17); 1360-1362).

Several studies demonstrate that surgeons who perform 30 or more hysterectomy procedures per year have better outcomes such as: decreased bleeding during and after the procedure and decreased infection rates (Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology, August 2002: 14(4); 417-422).
