Treatment/Procedure: Renal Sestamibi SPECT

Also called: Oncocytoma

A Renal Sestamibi SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test used to evaluate the function and structure of the kidneys. The scan utilizes a radiotracer called technetium-99m sestamibi, which helps in assessing the renal perfusion (blood flow) and function, and sometimes in the detection of renal masses or tumors.

Key Uses:

  • Assessing Renal Function: The scan helps in evaluating the function of the kidneys, particularly in patients who may have conditions like kidney disease, renal artery stenosis (narrowing of the blood vessels to the kidneys), or other disorders affecting kidney function.
  • Detecting Renal Tumors: Renal Sestamibi SPECT can be used to identify renal masses or tumors, including distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions based on their uptake of the radiotracer.
  • Post-Surgical Evaluation: It can be used to assess the function of the kidneys after surgery, such as a partial nephrectomy (removal of part of the kidney) or after a kidney transplant.
  • Evaluating Renal Perfusion: The scan provides valuable information about blood flow to the kidneys, which is crucial in diagnosing conditions like renal artery stenosis or assessing the impact of certain medications on kidney function.
