All newborns in Arkansas receive screening by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) which covers over 25 metabolic disorders of amino acids, organic acids and fatty acids.
This program has several integrated components that represent a collaborative effort among multiple agencies to make a seamless flow of screening, confirmatory testing, contact, management and follow up. The major components of this program include:
- Arkansas State Laboratory – The State Laboratory performs all first-tier newborn screening (except hearing loss).
- Hearing Loss.
- Arkansas Department of Health – Coordinates testing and follow up.
- Arkansas Children’s Hospital – Performs confirmatory (second tier) testing for MS/MS screening, CAH, and CF.
