Treatment/Procedure: Cardiac Sarcoidosis (FDG-PET/CT)

This imaging study is able to detect inflammatory changes within the heart muscle caused by sarcoidosis. Perfusion imaging may be used additionally to assess for any sarcoid-related scarring.

The benefits of this scan include:

  1. Early and Accurate Diagnosis: FDG-PET/CT is highly sensitive in detecting active inflammation in the heart, allowing for the early diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis, even when symptoms are subtle or absent.
  2. Assessing Disease Activity: The scan can measure the metabolic activity of inflamed heart tissue, helping to determine the severity and extent of the disease, which is crucial for effective treatment planning.
  3. Monitoring Treatment Response: FDG-PET/CT is valuable for monitoring how well a patient is responding to treatment. By assessing changes in inflammation, doctors can adjust therapies to optimize outcomes.
  4. Guiding Biopsy: If a biopsy is needed, the detailed imaging from the scan can guide the procedure to ensure tissue is taken from the most affected areas, increasing the likelihood of an accurate diagnosis.
  5. Comprehensive Evaluation: Combining PET with CT allows for a more comprehensive assessment, providing both functional information about inflammation and detailed anatomical images of the heart, which can help in understanding the full impact of the disease.
  6. Non-Invasive and Safe: The procedure is non-invasive, involving the injection of a radiotracer, and is considered safe, making it a preferred method for ongoing monitoring and management of cardiac sarcoidosis.
