1. I am a student at UAMS. Can I be treated at the Student Health Clinic?
Students must have paid the Student Health Clinic fee at registration. At the time of the appointment students are required to submit:
- Student Health Insurance Card
- Student ID
2. Will I need health insurance to be treated at the Student Health Clinic?
Students must show proof of health insurance before services are rendered, in case labs or x-ray are performed. All UAMS students are required to have health insurance.
3. Will I receive a charge if I am seen in the Student Health Clinic?
Consultation with the provider is free of charge to students who have paid the Student Health Clinic fee at registration. However, labs and x-rays are billed to the student’s insurance carrier and there may be a co-pay that will show up on the billing account.
4. How do I make an appointment?
Call the clinic directly. If the message prompt comes on, leave a message and your call will be returned quickly.
5. Why do I need to make an appointment?
Appointments assure that you are seen in a timely manner. Walk-ins are given the next available appointment on the schedule which may mean a longer wait if there are students with appointments ahead of you.
6. Will I be seen if I just walk in with no appointment?
Yes, but for faster service appointments are preferred.
7. If I am prescribed a medication at the Student Health Clinic, do I have to get the prescription filled at the UAMS pharmacy?
The Student Health Clinic provider will give prescriptions as appropriate for your medical condition and you can fill it at the pharmacy of your choice.
8. Will I need to pay for laboratory or x-ray procedures?
Charges incurred for laboratory or x-ray procedures are billed to the student’s health insurance provider. Deductibles for labs and x-rays are based on the PPO Allowance as seen under Benefits. If you receive a bill and have the university-sponsored student health insurance plan, please contact the Student Health Clinic and they will investigate the reason you received a bill. Students covered by other insurance plans are subject to all deductible requirements set forth by their personal health insurance provider
9. If the Student Health Clinic is not open for care, what can I do if I have a medical problem?
Students should seek after-hours care by contacting their primary care physician or visit the emergency room.
10. When I’m treated at the Student Health Clinic may I be given an excuse for my classes?
Documentation of your Student Health Clinic visit is provided by an attendance slip which is available upon request.
11. I have a pre-existing condition that requires medication. Can I get a refill on my medication through Student Health Clinic?
Your regular primary care provider should prescribe the medication for any refills.
12. If I have a chronic condition that requires a prescription for a controlled medication such as opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, can I get refills for these at SHC?
Your regular primary care provider or specialty provider should prescribe the medication for these refills as well.
13. If I need regular shots for conditions such as birth control or allergies will the Student Health Clinic provide these?
We will give birth control shots that Student Health Clinic or UAMS Family Medical Clinic providers have prescribed. Allergy shots should be given in the clinic where they were prescribed. Consideration for other types of shots will be made on a case by case basis.
14. If my primary care provider wants to order lab tests, can I come to the Student Health Clinic to have them drawn and run?
The Student Health Clinic will only run lab tests that are ordered by our provider for the purposes of evaluating the acute care concern.
15. If during my visit to the Student Health Clinic a condition is found that requires consultation with a specialist, how will I get this consultation?
The Student Health Clinic provider will make the referral to the specialty clinic and staff will help set up the appointment. The student will receive a confirmation by phone of the appointment and time after the appointment is made.
16. If during my visit to the Student Health Clinic a condition is found that requires chronic follow-up with a primary care provider, how will this information get to my primary care provider?
If the provider is at UAMS, the information will automatically be in the student’s chart in the UAMS EMR. If the student’s provider is off-campus, the student may request a copy of the visit note to be sent to the off-campus provider.
