With highly skilled and trained specialists and the latest technology, UAMS’ gastroenterology service is the most complete in the state. Our gastroenterology specialists include nationally known experts in the treatment of stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders.
UAMS has recently acquired the HALO Ablation Systems (HALO 90 and HALO 360) for treatment of low and high grade dysplasia in patients with Barrett’s esophagus. Clinical studies have shown that radiofrequency ablation allows removal of Barrett’s epithelium during an endoscopic procedure.
Published in the New England Journal of Medicine (N Engl J Med 2009;360:2277-88), the clinical results for radiofrequency ablation in Barrett’s esophagus with dysplasia show a high rate of complete eradication of both dysplasia and intestinal metaplasia and a reduced risk of disease progression.
