About Dr. Atchley

Clinical Biography

William Atchley, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and completed the combined MD/PhD program at UAMS. He then completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at UAMS, followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Atchley returned to UAMS in 2020, where he currently serves in his faculty role.

Dr. Atchley is a dedicated clinician-educator who provides care in the Pulmonary Outpatient Clinic, serves on the Inpatient Pulmonary Consultation Service, and delivers critical care services in the UAMS Medical Intensive Care Unit. He is actively involved in medical education, mentoring and supervising trainees in both the Internal Medicine Residency and the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship programs. He also serves as Clinical Co-Director of the Pulmonary Module for second-year medical students in the College of Medicine, where he contributes to teaching and curriculum development.

In addition to his clinical and educational responsibilities, Dr. Atchley provides institutional leadership as Associate Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and through service on key training program and hospital committees. His clinical and research interests focus on pulmonary hypertension, and he is actively working to expand clinical research initiatives in this area at UAMS.
