About Dr. Henske

Clinical Biography

Joseph (Joe) Henske, M.D. FACE, is a Professor in the College of Medicine at UAMS.  He serves as the Director of the Diabetes Program at UAMS Health. Before joining UAMS in 2019, he previously served as the department chair of Endocrinology at DuPage Medical Group in Chicago, IL. He was previously trained in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL and completed his fellowship in Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.
In his primary clinical role, he maintains a robust outpatient practice, caring for individuals with type 1, type 2, and also more rare forms of diabetes.  His specialties are the use of advanced diabetes technologies (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors), exercise management in diabetes, and diabetes in pregnancy.  He continues to maintain ongoing active research in these areas presented at regional and national meetings and renowned academic journals. Additionally, he is involved in the teaching and training of resident physicians and endocrinology fellows at UAMS, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. He has been an advocate and active fundraiser for Breakthrough T1D and the American Diabetes Association.
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes himself at the age of 15, Dr. Henske has committed his life to helping others with diabetes better manage their disease and live life to the fullest. He is an advocate for early diabetes awareness, helping improve access to medications and technologies for patients, and has been involved in research to one day find better ways to prevent, treat, and cure this disease.
He has had a lifelong passion for running, including having completed 15 marathons and encourages his patients to include exercise as a key component in the treatment of their diabetes.  Outside of work, he prioritizes faith and family – spending time with his wife Lauren, a Little Rock native, and their seven wonderful children.
