The Emergency Department

There are many problems where you may need to immediately call 911 or go to the emergency department for treatment instead of calling your PCP.  If you or a family member have severe and/or life-threatening symptoms such as:

  • signs of a heart attack:
    • chest pain
    • shortness of breath
    • sweating
  • signs of a stroke:
    • facial droop
    • weakness on one side
    • slurred speech, trouble speaking, or inability to speak
  • difficulty breathing
  • uncontrolled bleeding
  • broken bones
  • loss of consciousness
  • Any other problem that you think may be an emergency

Call 911

Urgent Issues

If  you need to be seen sooner than your next regular doctor’s visit you can usually be scheduled to see either your doctor or another member of our healthcare team.  If there is an urgency and/or there are no appointments available, you may need to be referred to the ED. Your doctor and/or nurses will work with you to decide the best place to be treated for problems like:

doctor and patient
  • urinary tract infections
  • complications from a fall
  • new moderate to severe pain
  • minor cuts and burns

Call 479-521-8260 and ask for your doctor’s nurse. If after hours, call 479-463-1000 and ask for the UAMS doctor that is on call.
