Aug. 28, 2008 | Of the 363 Arkansas physicians named to the 2008 “Best Doctors” list, more than half are on staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
UAMS has 201 staff members, or 55 percent, on the list of 363 “Best Doctors” in Arkansas. The list is compiled annually by Best Doctors Inc., a health care information service that polls more than 40,000 doctors across the country with the question, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer?”
In a separate statewide “Arkansas’ Best Doctors” list compiled by the weekly newspaper Arkansas Times and voted on by doctors statewide, UAMS physicians comprised nearly 40 percent of the total. Not only did UAMS physicians account for 139 of the 328 on the list, but they also made up 30 of the top 43 leading vote getters.
John Eidt, M.D., chief of UAMS’ Division of Vascular Surgery and director of the UAMS Vascular Center, received the most votes of any physician in all categories, according to the Arkansas Times.
According to Best Doctors Inc., the list has earned a worldwide reputation for reliable, impartial results by remaining completely independent. Physicians cannot pay to be included in its database and are not paid to provide input. Only 5 percent of America’s doctors earn a spot on the annual list.
The UAMS physicians on the “Best Doctors” list are specialists in many areas, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and from neurosurgery to orthopaedic surgery. Several have joint appointments at one of two UAMS affiliates, including Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). Both ACH and CAVHS are major clinical, research and teaching affiliates of UAMS. UAMS College of Medicine faculty physicians and surgeons provide the majority of medical care at both.
