NOV. 23, 2005 | An Italian delegation of 23 business leaders and government officials visited UAMS recently as part of an economic development visit to central Arkansas.


The delegation included Filippo Penati, president of the province of Milan and Valerio Bettoni, president of the province of Bergamo.


 


UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., welcomed the group to UAMS at a luncheon Nov. 16 he hosted in the Hamlen Board Room in the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute and gave highlights of the campus.


 


Presentations by two top UAMS Italian-born researchers made the visitors feel especially welcome by giving their entire presentation in Italian.


 


Giulia Baldini, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology discussed her research related to diabetes and how she is collaborating with several researchers in Italy.


 


Allesandro Santin, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, discussed his research related to ovarian cancer.


 


Jerry Damerow, UAMS BioVentures associate director for business, shared with the group how research is creating patents and new companies for the state of Arkansas.


 


At the close of the luncheon, Wilson presented Penati and Bettoni with a remembrance of their visit to UAMS. Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines served as host for the group while they visited central Arkansas.
