JULY 16, 2004 | Hiring Melony Williams Goodhand as the new Vice Chancellor for Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) was a no-brainer.

She not only has a wealth of accounting knowledge, but she also has experience in the health care field – making her the perfect person for the job.

Ronald Winters, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health Related Professions and chairman of the CFO search committee, said Goodhand brings the knowledge, experience and motivation necessary to be a successful chief financial officer for UAMS.

“The position of vice chancellor and chief financial officer is a key position in this organization,” Winters said, “especially since we have an annual budget of more than $700 million and a very diverse operation encompassing teaching, patient care, research and public service. And I think that she is the person for such a job.”

Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., said Goodhand will be an effective leader and manager for UAMS.

Goodhand joined UAMS on June 14. A certified public accountant with more than 25 years of experience in the health care field, Goodhand comes to Little Rock from Milford, Mich., where she was vice president for finance and chief compliance officer at Genesys Health System.

“I chose to come to UAMS because it is a challenge that breeds opportunity in a thriving and growing academic medical center,” Goodhand said.

A native of Brownsville, Tenn., Goodhand said the job also appealed to her because she wanted to move back to the South.

Goodhand holds a Master of Science degree in health care administration and business and has extensive business law education. Her experience includes 15 years working as a financial consultant for hospitals across the country, during which she spent eight years with major national accounting firms.  She was also a chief executive officer of a small Texas hospital and spent five years in executive positions in hospitals. She is also a trained process improvement facilitator and early in her career spent six years as a physician’s assistant in Memphis.

Goodhand said her goals as the CFO of UAMS are to “demonstrate accuracy and good strategic business decisions in the finance area, encourage innovation in looking at processes, enhance a strong sense of customer service and require underlying integrity in everything we do.”
