Abuse of the drug known as “ecstacy” is on the rise among Arkansas teenagers, many of whom erroneously believe it is natural and safe. Recent national surveys indicate that half of all high school students have tried the drug at least once.
Joseph Banken, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will explain that the drug is combination stimulant and hallucinogen. Ecstacy produces elevated serotonin levels which heighten sensory perception and the sense of community with everyone nearby. According to Dr. Banken, the drug can be lethal.
