Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences announced this week that friends and colleagues of retired chancellor Harry P. Ward, M.D., have begun a campaign to endow a chair in his honor.

“We wanted something that would last in perpetuity” to honor Dr. Ward, Wilson said.

Dr. Ward was chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) from 1979 until his retirement last month. Dr. Wilson, formerly dean of the UAMS College of Medicine, succeeded him as chancellor. Dr. Ward continues to serve UAMS as a senior advisor to Chancellor Wilson.

B. Alan Sugg, Ph.D., president of the University of Arkansas System, is a co-chair of the endowment campaign, along with Jerome H. Atchley, chairman of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center Foundation Fund Board; Elizabeth W. Blass of Little Rock; Jo Ellen Ford, president of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging Advisory Board; Richard H. Upton, chairman of the UAMS Foundation Fund Board; and Kent C. Westbrook, M.D., professor and interim chair of the Department of Surgery,

The endowment will ensure that in the new millenium UAMS – and Arkansas – will continue to benefit from excellent and visionary leaders of Harry Ward’s caliber. Income from the endowment will provide flexible funding to enable future chancellors to recruit excellent faculty and administrators, as well as support the office of the chancellor. The chancellor will hold the Harry P. Ward Endowed Chair.

All donors of $1,000 or more to the Harry P. Ward Endowed Chair in Leadership will be recognized in a permanent display on the UAMS campus. Donors may make pledges payable over a three-year period. Gifts of stock also are possible. Credit card gifts may be made online.
