Sports Medicine Specialist Chase Smith, M.D., Joins UAMS

He is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics in the UAMS College of Medicine. He began Aug. 31.

“Dr. Smith is an incredibly talented physician that we are thrilled to have join our staff,” said C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., chair of the Department of Orthopaedics. “The knowledge and surgical skill set skill set he has developed by working with Dr. Jim Andrews, the world’s foremost sports medicine expert, and his partners will complement our growing statewide sports medicine program.

Smith graduated magna cum laude from Auburn University in 2004 and earned his medical degree from UAMS in 2010. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a sports medicine fellowship in July at Andrews Sports Medicine Institute, where he worked with world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon James Andrews, M.D., and participated in the care of professional, college and high school athletes.

At the Andrews Institute, he specialized in arthroscopy and treatment of sports-related injuries, as well as open and arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.

In addition, he completed extra training to treat cartilage injuries in the knee with articular cartilage implantation and meniscal transplantation. Other interests include rodeo-related injuries as he is a member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and Arkansas Rodeo Association and actively competes in steer wrestling.

“I’m excited to join such a well-respected institution as UAMS and its superb orthopaedics staff,” said Smith.

He has completed research on bicep tenodesis in pitchers, and the effects of self-adherent wrap on range of motion.

Smith is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
