Free Legal Document Preparation, Health Screenings Offered at UAMS to Seniors Sept. 24
| LITTLE ROCK – Free legal document preparation and health screenings will be offered to seniors from 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 24 at the Geriatrics and Long-Term Care Update at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Stephens Spine Institute, 12th floor, Smith Auditorium.
“Serving our Seniors,” the free legal document preparation for seniors, will allow pre-registered attendees to meet with pro bono attorneys who will assist them in creating basic, pre-determined legal documents such as living wills and basic wills.
The volunteer attorneys will be coordinated with the assistance of the Center for Arkansas Legal Services. It is the first-time in its 16-year history the conference has offered legal document preparation services. The health screenings need no registration and will include screenings for cognition deficits, depression, blood pressure, vision, hearing as well as assessments of sleep health, nutrition health and basic function measures.
The Geriatrics and Long-Term Care Update, to be held Sept. 23-27, was begun by Jeanne Wei, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Institute on Aging, to provide the latest information to physicians and other health professionals, as well as caregivers to the aging population. Also for the first time, attorneys will present along with health care providers to offer a unique opportunity to learn about legal and medical issues important to seniors.
Co-coordinators for this pre-conference session are Priya Mendirata, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Geriatrics, Farnia Amirnia, M.D., associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Geriatrics, Vince Morris, J.D., director of the Arkansas Legal Services Partnership, Amy Pritchard, J.D., visiting assistant clinical professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Bowen School of Law, and Victor Richardson, J.D., associate director of the Arkansas Legal Services Partnership.
