Kidney Disease Commission Honors Sudhir Shah

By Spencer Watson

Sudhir Shah, M.D., receives the Bob Abbott Distinguished Service Award from the Arkansas Kidney Disease Commission.

Shah was recognized for his contributions to the kidney patient community in the state and for advancing the field of nephrology through better understanding of the pathophysiology of acute and chronic renal diseases and the mechanisms contributing to the high incidence of cardiovascular disease in patients with kidney disease. His research has been funded continuously by the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration since 1981.

Shah was also honored for his positive impact on countless medical students and physicians in training. He established the nephrology clinical training program at UAMS and obtained an NIH training grant while serving as division director from 1990 until this month, when he stepped down from the post. Shah will continue to serve as a senior faculty member with an increased focus on research and patient care.
