Kimbrough Named Fellow in American College of Surgeons
| style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">LITTLE ROCK — Mary Katherine (Whitlock) Kimbrough, M.D., assistant professor in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine’s Department of Surgery has been chosen as a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
Kimbrough was among 1,640 surgeons initiated in October at the college’s 2014 annual Clinical Congress in San Francisco.
Kimbrough, daughter of Howard Whitlock, of Ruston, Louisiana, and the late Jackie Whitlock, received her doctorate in 2005 from Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she later served her residency. She completed a trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at Louisiana State University in New Orleans.
She has board certifications from the American Board of Surgery in both general surgery and surgical critical care, and is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and Association of Surgical Education.
Applicants for the American College of Surgeons fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school, have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the college, possess certification by an American surgical specialty board or appropriate certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and must have been in practice for at least one year at the time of application. The applicant must demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency, and be approved by three-fourths of the college’s Board of Regents.
The American College of Surgeons was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. It has more than 79,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
