Register Now for ‘Heroes Against Hunger’ 5K on Oct. 11 Organized by UAMS Physician Assistant Program
| LITTLE ROCK — Students in the physician assistant program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will host the inaugural Heroes Against Hunger 5K Race benefiting the Arkansas Rice Depot Food for Kids program on Oct. 11 with a race route around the UAMS campus.
Sign up now online at heroesagainsthunger.racesonline.com/home, a site that includes complete race information, including packet pick up times and the route. The race starts at 8 a.m. that day on Jack Stephens Drive on the UAMS campus, near its intersection with Shuffield Drive. Race registration fee is $25.
The race will benefit the Arkansas Rice Depot Food for Kids program along with increasing awareness about the physician assistant profession in Arkansas. The Food for Kids program works to eliminate hunger in Arkansas children by providing new backpacks containing “kid-friendly” foods to participating schools. These backpacks are sent home with the students in the evenings and weekends.
The race is being organized by the Kelly-Rahn-Turnage Fellowship for Physician Assistant Students, a student organization in the UAMS physician assistant program that is part of the UAMS College of Health Professions. Being held during National Physician Assistants Week, the group seeks to raise awareness of the profession in the state.
A physician assistant is a licensed medical provider who works with the supervision of a physician. They are able to prescribe, diagnose, treat, and manage care in patients, which make them a vital member of the health care team.
The group, which includes 26 members of the program’s inaugural class of 2015 and 29 from the class of 2016, is named after three individuals instrumental in the development of the program: Patricia Kelly, Ph.D., PA-C, founding chair and program director; UAMS Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D.; and Richard Turnage, M.D., founding medical director for the program.
