Urologic Oncologist Matthew Katz, M.D., Joins UAMS

LITTLE ROCK – Matthew D. Katz, M.D., a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist specializing in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, is now seeing patients at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

Katz, who joins UAMS from Arkansas Urology P.A., in Little Rock, is the only two-year Society of Urologic Oncology accredited fellowship-trained urologist in Arkansas.

Katz’s advanced training brings new treatment techniques to UAMS, including new approaches in laparoscopic robotic-assisted removal of kidney tumors and robotic-assisted bladder removal. He also recently performed – with the help of UAMS’ Stephen Canon, M.D. – the first robotic pediatric urologic surgery in Arkansas.

Katz received his medical degree from UAMS and completed an internship and residencies in surgery and urology at the University of New Mexico for Health Sciences in Albuquerque, N.M.

He then completed an intensive two-year combined fellowship in minimally invasive urologic oncology and endourology/laparoscopy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Related Professions and Public Health; a graduate school; a 540,000-square-foot hospital; a statewide network of regional centers; and six institutes: the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute and the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging. It is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in the state. UAMS has 2,836 students and 761 medical residents. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 10,000 employees, including nearly 1,150 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers throughout the state.
