UAMS Opens Wound Center
| Oct. 9, 2009 | Patients with chronic wounds will find a special emphasis on healing at the new Wound Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). A first for UAMS, the Wound Center sees patients at UAMS’ Outpatient Surgery Clinic under the direction of Keith Bennett, M.D., who has received board certification in general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and family medicine. Bennett treats all types of chronic open wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, venomous spider bites, post-operative wound infections, and “just about anything else that you could possibly imagine,” he said. The center soon will include an advanced practice nurse with experience in wound care. In addition to patient care, the center will provide inpatient consultations at UAMS and patient evaluations for geriatric patients. This will include visits to some nursing homes. Bennett’s extensive training brings added benefits to his UAMS patients. A Jonesboro native, Bennett is an Arkansas State University and UAMS medical school graduate. He completed his general surgery residency and plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He has worked as a family practice physician in a teaching role as assistant professor at the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in Pine Bluff. He spent several years in private practice in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery in Pine Bluff and as a clinical instructor in surgery. In addition, Bennett was in private practice in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Hot Springs. Bennett also formerly owned the Bennett Wound Therapy Center in Hot Springs. The UAMS Wound Center job “is a perfect fit for me” Bennett said, adding that his background will help set UAMS apart from other wound centers. The Wound Center at UAMS also fills an important niche, especially given the expertise Bennett brings to the job. “By having somebody who can concentrate their time fully on wound care, there’s better continuity of care for the patients, and the patients are being seen by someone who has knowledge of the very latest treatment options,” he said.
