Poison Control Center
In one year, the Arkansas Poison Control and Drug Information Center answered 37,991 calls from all 75 counties in Arkansas. More than half of those calls were about children under the age of six, and the most common exposures were over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and household cleaning products.
The UAMS College of Pharmacy has operated the Arkansas Poison Control and Drug Information Center since 1973 as a service to the individuals and healthcare professionals. The Center’s aim is to provide timely, helpful clinical advice in potential poison exposures. The Center serves the entire state with poisoning, infectious disease and public health emergency information. We are not only here to serve in case of an emergency, but also to answer any questions you may have.
Our highly-trained staff consists of seven pharmacists, five nurses, one doctor and one public health educator. The Poison Control Center has been certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers as a regionalized poison control center since September 2005.
Our professional staff provides necessary triage via the nation’s toll-free poison and emergency telephone number, 1-800-222-1222. The number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and serves all of the United States. When you call this number, you will be directed to the appropriate center by your area code. So be aware, that if you are out of state and have an Arkansas number, it will be directed to the Arkansas Poison Control Center. You will not have to listen to an automated recording or navigate through a phone tree; instead you will reach the center directly. When you call, you should have an idea of what the person was exposed to and any relevant history.
We recognize the dangers of becoming exposed to the wrong substances. The Arkansas Poison Control and Drug Information Center is here to help and serve you.
