Speech Therapy

If you had an illness or injury that affects your ability to communicate clearly and effectively or if you have had a condition since birth, UAMS can assist you with your speech difficulties. Our speech therapy program offers diagnostic and treatment services for adults with communication problems as well as voice concerns and swallowing difficulties.

Adults are seen by specially-trained speech language pathologists in the Jackson T. Stephens Spine Institute for the following areas/ disorders:

Traumatic brain injury
Motor speech disorders (Apraxia and dysarthia)
Swallowing disorders (Fiberoptic endoscopic swallow studies and videofluoroscopic swallow studies)
Speaking voice and professional voice use
Tracheostomy care
Spasmodic dysphonia
Voice restoration following laryngectomy
We are one of the leading adult evaluation sites in the state for augmentative and alternative communication devices.

We also offer outpatient services to children ages 5 – 12 through our PRI unit on the 5th floor of the hospital.


Appointments with the Speech Language Pathology Clinic are by referral only. Please contact your primary care doctor or visit one of our doctors in the Center for Primary Care to obtain a referral.

What should I bring to the appointment?

For your first appointment, please bring a picture ID and your insurance card. The UAMS medical staff will also need information about any medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter medications. Please also bring your referral from your primary care provider or physician. You should also bring any medical records you can provide, including test results from other clinics, as well as any voice prosthesis/ electrolarynx.

For future appointments, please advise us of any changes in your insurance information or your medications.

How do I request a prescription refill or contact a nurse from the clinic?

Call the Clinic at 501-526-6990 and enter extension 2328 to contact a nurse or request a prescription refill.

If you originally filled your prescription at the UAMS Outpatient Pharmacy, you can also refill your prescription online.

Available in Parking 3 at the corner of Cedar and Capitol. Valet parking is available in front of the Spine Institute for a fee.


Take the Spine Institute bridge at Level 2B in Parking 3
Exit walkway, take the elevator to the 3rd floor.
