Nutrition During Therapy

  • You should take your vitamins with a snack or light meal to help your body better absorb them.
  • Try to drink about 12 8-ounce cups of water, 100% fruit juice or caffeine-free beverages each day.
  • It’s vital for you to eat a healthy well-balanced diet to ensure that both you and your baby get the nutrition you need.
  • You should be able to get all the nutrients you need during your pregancy from prenatal vitamins and food if you eat a vareity of healthy foods.
  • Your extra calories should come from nutritious foods, such as whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-fat or nonfat dairy products.

Daily Meal Planning Guidelines

  • You should eat at least 5-7 ounces of grains (pasta, cereal or whole grain bread), and at least half of your grains should be whole grains. It also is recommended that you choose cereals and breads that are fortified with iron.
  • You should consume at least 5-6 ounces of protein (fish, poultry or lean meat). If you do not eat meat, you can get protein through other foods, such as peanut butter, nuts, eggs, tofu or beans.
  • You should eat at least 3 cups of vegetables, which should include at least one cup of dark green or orange vegetables that are high in Vitamin C.
  • You should have at least 2 cups of fruits daily, but limit your joice to only 100% fruit juice and only 1 cup each day.
  • You should consume at least 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free dairy foods to get enougch calcium and Vitamin D each day.
