Kidney Transplant Nutrition Services

At UAMS, our expert dietitians can help you whether you are preparing for a transplant, on dialysis or have just undergone a transplant.

Many chronic kidney disease patients are overweight or obese. Transplant centers often have specific requirements, such as a certain BMI, for patients to qualify for transplants. We can help you meet your goals while educating you about the transplant process and your dietary needs throughout the process.

If you were on dialysis and had a kidney transplant, your dietary needs have changed. Following your kidney transplant, the goals for nutrition care are to promote wound healing, reduce infections and combat the adverse effects of post-transplant medications.

While kidney failure may have caused you to experience many limitations on the types of foods you could eat before your transplant, several of these dietary restrictions may not apply after transplant surgery. Because of this new freedom to indulge in many different foods, weight gain is common post-transplant. Also, you may experience increased feelings of hunger due to post-transplant medications. Our dietitians will work with you to make sure you’re receiving all the nutrients you need while managing your weight.

We can also work with different types of transplant patients. For more on our clinic and the services we offer, contact the Kidney Transplant Nutrition Clinic.
