Child Inpatient Facility
In a continuation of our tradition of excellence, UAMS now offers inpatient services for children through our Psychiatric Research Institute. We recognize the increased need to provide treatment for children with mental health issues, so our new unit is specifically designed to meet the needs of these patients.
Our facility will treat children 2 to 12 years of age. And our caring, multidisciplinary staff includes specialists in psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work and education as well as speech, language and occupational therapy. We treat youth with a variety of illnesses including:
- Post-traumatic stress
- Mood disorders
Our new unit is designed to be more kid-friendly with a day-room that has toys, board games and a big-screen television. Parents, guardians and siblings are encouraged to visit and have open communication with the doctors and staff members to ensure that the children are receiving the individualized treatment they need.
Our compassionate staff uses a unique approach that involves collaborative problem solving, working with children to identify their individual needs based on how they interact with others. Even after the patient is discharged, our staff continues to follow the child to provide input on the treatment plan with community-based caregivers.
Our new inpatient facility for children is located on the 5th floor of the Psychiatric Research Institute building. The unit has 10 individual rooms to serve the patients who require hospitalization due to some form of mental illness. Some of the rooms have an extra bed to allow a parent or guardian to stay overnight with the child.
