Non-Invasive Liver Tumor Treatment With Histotripsy

A non-invasive option using sound waves to target liver tumors. No surgery, needles or incisions required.

A New Option for Liver Tumor Treatment

UAMS Health is the first in Arkansas to offer histotripsy, a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors without surgery, needles or incisions. Histotripsy works by creating tiny bubble clouds within the tumor. These bubbles rapidly expand and collapse, breaking down targeted tumor tissue at the cellular level while helping preserve surrounding healthy tissue.

Watch: How Histotripsy Works

Histotripsy uses a device placed on the abdomen to send focused sound waves to a liver tumor. These waves create tiny bubble clouds from natural gases in the tissue. As the bubbles rapidly expand and collapse, they break down and destroy the targeted tumor tissue.

Treatment Benefits and Patient Eligibility

Histotripsy may be an option for patients with primary liver tumors or tumors that have spread to the liver. Eligibility depends on tumor size, type and location, overall health and treatment goals. Benefits may include no cuts, incisions or needles, precise targeting of liver tumors and preservation of surrounding healthy tissue. Your care team will review your imaging and diagnosis to determine whether histotripsy is right for you.

Advanced Treatment in Arkansas

Histotripsy is an FDA-approved technology for liver tumors, following more than 20 years of development. Available at leading institutions nationwide, this advanced treatment is now offered at UAMS Health—bringing innovative care closer to home for patients across Arkansas.
