Can eating stuffing from a turkey cause salmonella poisoning?

Turkey

This isn’t so much of a myth as it is a warning. Salmonella enterocolitis, or salmonellosis, is an infection in the lining of the small intestine caused by the bacteria salmonella.

Salmonellosis, one of the most common types of food poisoning, occurs after consuming food or water that is contaminated with the salmonella bacteria. Any food, such as poultry or eggs, can become contaminated during preparation if conditions and equipment for food preparation are unsanitary.

But that doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite Thanksgiving treat, according to UAMS’ Department of Dietetics and Nutrition. If everything is prepared properly, there is nothing to worry about. The salmonella bacteria in contaminated food will be killed by cooking foods at high temperatures.
