12th Street Health & Wellness Center loves our students & we are so thankful for all that they do! This guide serves as a quick reference about the process of signing up, our expectations, and the role of non-UAMS students at our clinic!
Application & Signing Up
12th Street HWC uses Volgistics as our web-based volunteer platform.
Complete the following steps to gain access to Volgistics:
- Complete a short (<10 minutes) online HIPAA training course. On a Chrome browser, go to hipaa.uams.edu, then click on the “Education & Training” tab & select “Level I HIPAA Training”. You do not need to fill out the form online at the end of the video; instead, you will need to sign the HIPAA logbook at clinic stating that you have completed the training.
- After you have completed your HIPAA training, find the Student Volunteer Application.
- Fill out the application. Under College/Profession, choose
“Undergraduate Student” or “High School Student”. Under Volunteer Assignment, you can choose from any of the following: “Director on Duty” (DOD), “Patient Care Coordinator” (PCC), “Lab Volunteer”, or “Student Shadow”. If you have never been trained for the DOD, PCC, or Lab positions, please select the appropriate “Training for” box. Please note that you can go in & add more assignments after your application has been accepted. - Please allow 5 business days for your application to be accepted, then go to the UAMS Volgistics portal, which is linked on the Student Volunteers page of our website. Log on using your username & password. You will then be able to sign up for shifts for any of the above positions for our clinic nights.
Expectations & Roles
12th Street HWC is composed of graduate, undergraduate, professional, & community volunteers! Every volunteer from every background plays a vital role at clinic. We couldn’t do this without you! As a non-UAMS student, we expect that you will stroke a balance between shadowing teams versus volunteering in administrative roles. As DOD, PCC, or lab volunteer, we expect that you will undergo the appropriate training for the position. You must be able to work well with a variety of people, both patients & students!
As a student shadow, you cannot legally ask the patient questions or perform any exams on the patient. However, you are welcome to take notes and ask the team members as many questions as you like when you are not in the exam room with the patient.
Remember, these patients come to see us because they are not able to receive healthcare elsewhere! As a volunteer, we expect you to be professional, courteous, & kind. We understand that life is busy, but if you sign up for a shift please do your best to attend & be on time!
Dress Code: As DOD, PCC, or student shadow, we expect our volunteers to
be dressed in business casual clothing. This means nice slacks, blouses, collared shirts, or dresses and skirts that are an appropriate length. Jeans, leggings, and scrubs are not permitted. Lab volunteers can dress slightly more casual, but the following clothing items are strongly discouraged: athletic clothing, shorts, flip flops, or dresses that are more than 4 inches above your knees.
