Did you know that about 75% of all women will experience at least one yeast infection during their lifetime? And many are plagued by recurrent yeast infections.
Yeast is a type of fungus, and yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus. Small amounts of yeast are always present in the vagina, but when too much yeast grows, it results in an infection.
Causes and Symptoms
Some conditions make it more likely for women to have a yeast infection such as:
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- Antibiotic use
- Suppressed immune system
- Zinc deficiencies
The most common symptom of a yeast infection is extreme itchiness in and around the vagina. Other symptoms include:
- Burning, redness and swelling of the vagina and vulva
- Pain when urinating
- Soreness
- Thick, white vaginal discharge
- Rash on the vagina
Diagnosis and Treatments
To diagnose this infection, the discharge on the skin of the vulva or in the vagina may be taken and examined under a microscope. If you have a yeast infection, antifungal drugs are the usual treatment. A cream or tablet or both can be prescribed for your condition and are the most common treatments. Over-the-counter medications are available, but you should always talk to your doctor before treating yourself.
If you have recurrent infections, you may benefit by limiting the amount of sugar in your diet. Sugar sources could include candies, syrup, milk, cottage cheese and artificial sweeteners.
