Groin hernias are a type of hernia that occur in the lower abdomen where the abdomen meets the thigh. The two main types are inguinal and femoral hernias.
Inguinal Hernia
An inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia. It occurs when tissue—often part of the intestine—pushes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall in the inguinal canal.
Key features:
- More common in men
- Appears as a bulge in the groin or scrotum
- May cause pain or discomfort, especially when lifting, coughing, or bending
- Can be present at birth or develop over time
Femoral Hernia
A femoral hernia occurs slightly lower in the groin, where the femoral canal allows blood vessels to pass into the leg.
Key features:
- More common in women
- Often appears as a small bulge in the upper thigh or groin
- Higher risk of complications like incarceration or strangulation
- May be less noticeable but more serious
