Eye Inflammation Specialist Ahmed A. Sallam, M.D., Ph.D., Joins UAMS
| Feb. 2, 2016 | Ahmed A. Sallam, M.D., Ph.D., a physician with specialty training in uveitis, a form of eye inflammation that can lead to permanent vision loss, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and sees patients in at the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute.
Sallam also is an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the College of Medicine. He specializes in the management of ocular inflammation and infection.
“Dr. Sallam’s specialty training in uveitis is a welcome addition to JEI and the state of Arkansas,” said Christopher T. Westfall, M.D., chairman of the UAMS Department of Ophthalmology and institute director. “We are certain his expertise will serve Arkansans well.”
Sallam completed two fellowships in uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Moorfields Hospital, regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s finest eye treatment centers, is the largest eye hospital in Britain and one of the largest in the world.
Sallam also specializes in the treatment of vitreoretinal disorders including retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and has undertaken fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery in the United Kingdom. He is board certified in ophthalmology from the U.K. Royal College of Ophthalmologists and has held a prior consultant appointment at the Ophthalmology Department, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust in the U.K. His expertise led to his being made a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth).
“Along with an opportunity to bring the ocular inflammation management service to Arkansas, I was attracted to the Jones Eye Institute because it is highly regarded in clinical care and research,” said Sallam.
Sallam is an active researcher and has authored more than 45 publications and book chapters in the fields of uveitis and retinal surgery. He has been involved in many international studies investigating novel agents for the treatment of ocular inflammation and retinal diseases.
