‘One Health Arkansas’ Conference Nov. 14 Promotes Appropriate Use of Antibiotics
| LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission and Arkansas Department of Health are hosting the 2015 One Health Arkansas conference Nov. 14 for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, veterinarians and other health professionals interested in national efforts to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria and promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics.
The conference will take place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 12th floor of the UAMS Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute at 501 Jack Stephens Drive. Parking is available in Parking Deck 3 at the corner of Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue.
The cost to attend is $75 for those who preregister by Oct. 30. After that, on-site registration is available for $100. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Continuing education credits are available for the conference.

“One Health provides a tremendously useful model to understand how human, animal, and environmental health outcomes are intertwined,” said Nate Smith, M.D., M.P.H., state health officer and director of the Arkansas Department of Health. “Efforts to utilize this model in Arkansas have largely been led by our veterinary sciences colleagues, but it is crucial that physicians, nurses, and pharmacists become more engaged with the One Health initiative, both within the state and on a national level.”
The One Health Initiative is a rapidly growing movement to forge collaborations between physicians, osteopaths, veterinarians, dentists, nurses and other scientific-health and environmentally related disciplines in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. More than 800 prominent scientists, physicians and veterinarians worldwide have endorsed the initiative.
