UAMS to Offer Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening Jan. 5

By Spencer Watson

The screening is for people older than 55 who have signs or symptoms of PAD. Symptoms include pain in the calf or thigh/buttock area when walking, pain in the feet at rest when lying flat, or non-healing sores on the toes or feet.

To register, call 501-851-4344. Appointments will be from 12:30-4 p.m. and are limited.

The screening, led by Matthew Smeds, M.D., assistant professor of vascular surgery, involves taking blood pressure measurements in the arms and legs to look for blockage in the arteries of the legs.

Risk factors for PAD include smoking, diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, heart disease or stroke.
