Elizabeth Meyer, Cancer Institute Auxiliary president, introduces the program.

The award is presented each year to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the mission of the Cancer Institute.

“There’s no doubt that Dr. Makhoul is an outstanding physician, scientist and educator,” said UAMS Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D. “But what stands out most about him is his ability to connect with people and his true desire to help them heal, learn and grow.”

Makhoul is a noted clinical researcher with expertise in breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers. His research focuses on the role on antiangiogenic therapy and targeting cancer initiating cells in breast cancer, as well as issues related to quality of life and survivorship for cancer patients.

In February, he was named the inaugural recipient of the Laura F. Hutchins, M.D. Distinguished Chair for Hematology and Oncology after assuming the role of director of the UAMS Division of Hematology/Oncology.

He also has served as director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program since 2008 and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards.

“Dr. Makhoul has made an undeniable difference in the lives of his patients, students, fellows and colleagues at UAMS,” said Peter Emanuel, M.D., director of the UAMS Cancer Institute. “He is full of innovative ideas and is a genuinely kind person who cares deeply about improving the Cancer Institute and the lives of those around him.”

The Cancer Institute Auxiliary is one of Arkansas’ largest volunteer organizations with more than 500 members dedicated to providing information, service, compassion and hope to those whose lives are touched by cancer. Elizabeth Meyer serves as the auxiliary’s 2013-14 president.
