UAMS 12th Street Health and Wellness Center to Host ‘March Man-ness’ at Saint Mark March 22
| LITTLE ROCK – The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) 12th St. Health and Wellness Center invites the public to participate in free health care services at its ”March Man-ness Men’s Health Event” March 22 at Saint Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock.
While this event focuses on men’s health, women also are invited to receive free blood pressure checks, body mass index estimates, glucose and cholesterol screenings, dental screenings and physical examinations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Males may also have blood drawn to check testosterone levels and prostate sensitive antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer screenings. A panel of health care professionals, pharmacists and physicians will be on hand to answer personal health questions. Saint Mark Baptist Church is at 5722 W. 12th Street.

Last November, which was Men’s Health month, second-year UAMS College of Medicine students organized multiple events to raise funds for the Men’s Health Event. Clint Aguiar, Joshua Harpool, Christopher Murphy, Stephen Nix, and Kathy Parker, all second-year medical students in the Class of 2016, organized a chili and cornbread cook-off, bake sale, and “Manly Mustaches for Men’s Health” competition. First-year medical students also joined in for the mustache competition and together both classes raised $2,000.
In addition to Saint Mark Baptist Church and UAMS College of Medicine Classes of 2016 and 2017, Epoch Health and Arkansas Urology are sponsoring and providing supplies and services for the Men’s Health Event.
The UAMS 12th St. Health and Wellness Center opened in early 2013 as a community-based, student-led, interprofessional health and wellness center that provides free health screenings and health management services for people in the Little Rock Promise Neighborhood and surrounding areas. The center includes services by students and faculty across the UAMS colleges of Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the Graduate School. The center is run by students and provides free preventive health care, particularly heart health, as well as consultations, screenings and treatment for chronic health conditions, and information for healthy living. It also has a dentistry component with dental hygiene students and audiology services with audiology students. Normal clinic hours are Monday and Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at 4010 West 12th St. Appointments are not necessary, but welcome.
