Angels of Hope Bake Valentine Cookies for Cancer Patients

By Ben Boulden

Feb. 14, 2014 | In a gesture of Valentine’s Day affection, 20 high school students shared home-baked cookies with cancer patients at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

One of the volunteers distributing the cookies was Mary Margaret Maginn, a senior at Mount St. Mary Academy and a former Angel of Hope.

The Angel of Hope program was founded in 2008 and is open to high school juniors. Its mission is to teach cancer awareness, encourage volunteerism and inspire leadership among teenage girls. As part of the program’s community service component, the girls are required to volunteer at local hospitals with cancer treatment facilities, at the 20th Century Club’s Lodge and at cancer-related events.

The lodge provides housing for cancer patients receiving treatment at facilities throughout Little Rock. Patients are placed at the facility on a first-come, first-served basis based on referrals from social workers at their treatment facility.
