Event to Offer Insight into Lung Cancer Prevention and Treatment Nov. 8 in North Little Rock
| LITTLE ROCK – An upcoming event will offer insight into the latest advances in preventing, diagnosing and treating lung cancer.
The Fourth Annual Lung Cancer Symposium is open to both health care professionals and people interested in cancer advocacy. It is set for 7:50 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock. Registration will begin at 7 a.m.

Comedian and lung cancer survivor Rene Hicks will present “Tobacco and Lung Cancer: A Survivor’s Perspective” at 8 a.m. A nonsmoker, Hicks was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2001 due to her exposure to second-hand smoke in comedy clubs where she performed. She now incorporates her experience and the dangers of second-hand smoke into her act, which regularly appears in venues across the country and on networks such as Comedy Central and Showtime.
Other sessions include such topics as tobacco legislation, smoking cessation, holistic approaches to treating lung cancer, e-cigarettes, research clinical trials and more.
Speakers include UAMS physicians and other health care professionals specializing in lung cancer and other lung diseases, as well as Arkansas Surgeon General Joe Thompson, M.D., and representatives from St. Bernards Clopton Clinic in Jonesboro and SRI International nonprofit research institute in Menlo Park, Calif.
The event is co-sponsored by the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the Arkansas Department of Health/Stamp Out Smoking and the Arkansas Cancer Coalition.
