Makhoul Named Director of UAMS Division of Hematology/Oncology

Makhoul joined the UAMS faculty in 2002 and is an associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine. He also has served as director of the division’s Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program since 2008.

Makhoul graduated from medical school from the Tishreen University Faculty of Medicine in Syria. He received training in France in endocrinology and metabolic diseases.  In 1995, he came to the United States where he studied hematology/oncology at Penn State.

Makhoul is a noted clinical researcher with expertise in breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers. His research focuses on the role on antiangiogenic therapy and targeting cancer initiating cells in breast cancer, as well as quality of life and survivorship. He has been recognized with many clinical and teaching awards, including seven years on both Castle Connolly’s “Best Doctors in America” and Arkansas Times’ “Arkansas’ Best Doctors” lists and six years on the UAMS Circle of Excellence Dean’s List Outpatient All Stars.

He was selected by senior UAMS College of Medicine students in 2007 and 2011 to receive the Red Sash Award, is a five-time recipient of a yearly education award from the UAMS Department of Medicine, and was presented with the Claibourne Watkins, MD Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Introduction to Clinical Medicine II class of 2007-2008.
