UAMS Nurses Honored During Fair, Fashion Show

May 13, 2013 | Florence Nightingale (aka UAMS’ Joy Jennings), held her famous lantern high as she showed off her 1892 uniform with other nursing students from yesteryear in UAMS’ salute to more than 100 years of nursing.
UAMS nurses were able to step back in time to see the evolution of nursing uniforms during the 5th Annual Nursing Professional Practice Fair and fashion show held in the UAMS Medical Center lobby May 9.
The fair was organized by the UAMS Center for Nursing Excellence with the fashion show coordinated by the Image Council of the UAMS Professional Nurses Organization as a part of the 2013 National Nurses Week festivities at UAMS.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Arkansas State
Board of Nursing, the fashion show featured UAMS nursing students wearing uniforms from the 40s, 60s and 90s as well as a future 2050 uniform. In honor of Nightingale’s birthday May 12, Jennings, assistant professor in the UAMS College of Nursing, modeled a uniform reminiscent of what Nightingale would have worn.
Amber Smith, junior nursing student modeled an American Red Cross nursing uniform from the 40s made of thick, dark, wool with a matching hat. It was previously worn by Dorothea Funk, deceased past president of the Arkansas State Nurses Association.
A 1967 uniform with a white apron, skirt and white collar and a white sailor-like hat was modeled by incoming nursing student Rachael Smith. The uniform belongs to and was originally worn by Cheryl Schmidt, Ph.D., R.N., associate professor in the UAMS College of Nursing.
Student Anna Young modeled a 1990s army combat nurse uniform and student Eden Pettit modeled the 2050 uniform featuring blue scrubs while she was holding a laptop and cell phone and had a Bluetooth in her ear.
The Professional Nursing Organization presented the second Annual Nursing Recognition Awards during the fair:
- Frances Vanlandingham, R.N., Infusion 4 Clinic, received the Community Service Award for her service within UAMS and also for her regular trips to Honduras to provide nursing services.
- Cynthia Boyd, R.N., medical oncology, received the Preceptor of the Year Award. She was recognized for not only being a wonderful teacher, but also “mentor, colleague and friend.”
- Libby Stell, R.N.P., clinical services manager of the UAMS Infusion 4 Clinic, received the Betty Casali Transformational Leadership Award. Her nursing staff recognized her for her ability to appreciate all jobs within the clinic and her teamwork skills.
