UAMS College of Pharmacy Dean’s Award Goes to UT Professor

The award for long and consistent achievement in the profession of pharmacy was presented during the Senior Honors Convocation on May 18.

A native of Stamps and a graduate of Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood, he earned both a Bachelor of Science and doctorate in pharmacy at the UAMS College of Pharmacy. He also earned a Master of Art degree in business administration from Webster University.

Waddell, also an oncology pharmacist at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tenn., received the 2011 American Pharmacists Association (APhA ) Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Distinguished Achievement Award in Hospital and Institutional Practice. He was selected in recognition of his impact on pharmacy practice within a hospital setting, including medication treatment for oncology patients and training of students and residents. He also was the 2000 recipient of the Mel Liter Award as U.S. Army Clinical Pharmacist of the Year. In 1999 he was inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit and in 2005 he was named a distinguished member of the U.S. Army Medical Department Regiment.

Waddell completed residencies in hospital pharmacy practice and hematology-oncology pharmacy practice at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army and was on active duty as a pharmacy officer from 1984 to 2005, serving in a variety of positions in Georgia, Arizona, the Republic of Korea, New Jersey, Texas and Washington, D.C. He is board certified in oncology pharmacy and is a fellow of the APhA.

He is co-editor of the book “On Being a Pharmacist: True Stories by Pharmacists,” published in 2010, and co-author of “Guide to Combination Cancer Chemotherapy Regimens,” published in 2011. He writes the oncology chapter for the “APhA’s Complete Review for Pharmacy.” He has been a contributing editor for Hospital Pharmacy Journal since 1999 and has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers and abstracts, mostly in the field of oncology pharmacy.

Waddell is married for 27 years to the former Debbie McKinney and they have two sons, Alex and Austin.
