UAMS Radiation Oncology Center

If your doctor recommends radiation as part of your cancer treatment plan, our caring and compassionate specialists in the UAMS Radiation Oncology Center provide cutting-edge medical care.

Thanks to our new technology, patients have reduced treatment times and frequency, leading to a better quality of life. Using conventional radiotherapy equipment, an early-stage lung cancer patient may have required 30 or more treatments. Today, as few as three to eight treatments may be necessary.

Our center’s two Varian TrueBeam STx linear accelerators are the only two identical devices in Arkansas capable of delivering precision external beam radiation with ultra–high dose rates. In addition, UAMS now offers the state’s only Accuray TomoHDA.

We also continue to provide treatment techniques unique to our program in Arkansas, including:

  • Gamma Knife Perfexion® for intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery
  • GRID (spatially fractionated radiation therapy) for large tumors that are unlikely to be controlled with conventional radiation therapy
  • Superficial hyperthermia – used in conjunction with radiation therapy to enhance cancer cell killing effects

UAMS radiation oncologists work collaboratively to provide state-of-the-art treatment options, including TomoTherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for cranial and body lesions, and hyperthermia therapy, which involves heating the tumor.

Our center treats both adult and pediatric cancer patients and is Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s referral site for radiation treatment. We recognize the special needs of the children in our care are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality health care for them and for all patients.

Providing comprehensive cancer treatment, our team of experts includes three physicians, five physicists, four medical dosimetrists and 14 radiation therapists. As the only site in Arkansas conducting federally funded radiation oncology research, we are working to advance technology to ensure the latest treatments for our patients.

Located adjacent to the UAMS Outpatient Center, our cancer clinics, infusion clinics, medical center and other complementary patient services are conveniently located just moments from the center.
